Chimney Crown

Chimney crown is the cement that is positioned virtually flat at the apex of a masonry chimney. The top of the chimney will be covered and sealed. The majority of chimney crowns are not built correctly and typically were created from mortar mix. Water will enter the chimney when this material deteriorates. A chimney crown should be made correctly with Portland cement.

Flue Liner

It's crucial that the flue liner projects above the crown at least two inches. The crown needs to supply a downward slope that moves water to the edge and away from the middle of the chimney. An additional type of crown has a drip edge which overhangs to better move water away from the top of the chimney. During cold weather this will prevent deterioration and freeze/thaw damage.
