Wood-Burning Stoves

Enclosed stoves are better than fireplaces because they are more efficient, easier to control, and have less smoke emissions. In free air, solid fuels burn at only about 518 degrees Fahrenheit, which is very low. Heat produced through convection doesn't get captured, smoke particles are produced but not totally burned, and the air supply isn't easily controlled.

The stove will enclose the fire in an area that pulls fresh air through the fuel that is burning. This fresh air causes the temperature for efficient combustion to rise to ~1100 degrees Fahrenheit. Convection losses can be eliminated almost entirely due to the regulation of air provided by the enclosure.

Having an enclosed fire can prevent heated air from being sucked into the chimney from the room. Open fireplaces can account for a loss of heat of many cubic yards of heated air each hour.

Some stoves depend on catalytic converters to start combustion of the residual gas and smoke particles not burned previously. Additional designs might have a firebox insulation, a big baffle to produce an intense, hotter gas flow path. Now, enclosed stoves often have windows built in to allow light to escape and provide the user with a clear view of the fire's progress.

One common type of stove is the pot-bellied stove, or the Franklin stove. An effective stove can be made from kits and two 55-gallon barrels.

If you are buying, using, or installing any type of stove, check it carefully to make sure it is made well and has been installed correctly. Also make sure the stove and chimney are kept clean from dirt and debris.
